Today's human society faces enormous challenges. The international financial crisis has had a profound impact on global development. Energy shortages and the greenhouse effect have seriously impeded the sustainable development of human society. Therefore, we must maintain the economic growth rate without increasing or decreasing energy consumption, making the environment better and more friendly. This undoubtedly depends on the advancement of green process technology. As a new type of medium, ionic liquids provide a source of innovation for green process engineering breakthroughs and new opportunities for solving energy and environmental problems.

A number of applied studies of ionic liquids are undergoing pilot or industrial tests and have even entered the stage of industrialization. Ionic liquids can not only be used as a new medium for chemical reaction and separation, but also as a new magnetic material, nano-structure functional material, lubricating material, aerospace propellant, etc., and even hope to become food and medicine. The basic and applied research of ionic liquids has experienced a period of rapid growth since the 1990s, and its basic and applied research is entering a new stage. The National Conference on Ionic Liquids and Green Processes is a professional conference on ionic liquids. It was sponsored by the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to promote the development of ionic liquids and green processes and strengthen academic exchanges and cooperation among domestic counterparts..

The 1st National Conference on Ionic Liquids and Green Processes

The first Asia-Pacific Conference on Ionic Liquids and Green Processes and the First National Conference on Ionic Liquids and Green Processes, sponsored by the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, were successfully held in Fragrant Hill Hotel, Beijing, from November 5 to 8, 2008. The Chemical Industry Press, Zhejiang University and China University of Petroleum (Beijing) were co-sponsors. Professor Zhang Suojiang, executive deputy director of the Institute of Process Engineering, and Professor Urs Welz-Biermann from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, served as the chairman of the meeting. The conference was strongly supported by dozens of domestic and foreign companies such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society (RSC) and the German Merck Company. Nearly 200 experts and scholars from home and abroad attended the conference and presented the latest theoretical foundations and application results. Academician Guo Musun of the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director Sun Hongwei of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Deputy Director Cao Jinghu of the Bureau of International Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Dr. Sarah Ruthven of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) addressed the opening ceremony.

Experts at home and abroad have conducted in-depth and extensive discussions on the common science and key technical issues of ionic liquids and green chemistry. The consensus reached at this meeting is as follows: Ionic liquids have rapidly expanded from the fields of green chemistry and chemistry to functional materials, photothermal and optoelectronic materials and life sciences. Ionic liquid media great potential in meeting the sustainable development of society and the self-development of science and technology; the development of new nano- and micro-materials and magnetic materials, the comprehensive utilization of new energy such as biomass and solar energy, and the use of ionic liquids as a medium for a new generation of reaction and separation technologies are gestating major breakthroughs in new energy-saving and emission-reduction technologies; although great progress has been made in research on the structural properties of ionic liquids, engineering foundations and process intensification techniques, further research is still needed. To this end, it needs the cross-disciplinary and integration, and the cooperation and exchange of scholars and experts in many fields.
